F.A.Q
What should I wear?
For your initial sessions we recommend loose fitting clothing. T-Shirt and jogging bottoms would be ideal. Students wishing to take part in gradings will require a formal training suit called a dobok which can be purchased through the club.
Why learn Tae Kwon Do?
Tae Kwon Do is a dynamic sport that exercises all areas of the body including the mind. Students who stick at the sport will experience improved fitness, coordination, mental agility and confidence. There are many aspects to Tae Kwon Do, whether you wish to concentrate on the technical skill of learning at pattern or taking part in sparring, there is something for everyone.
Is it dangerous?
There is an inherent risk in taking part in any sport, particularly contact sports. Beginner students will not be expected to take part in sparring. Non-contact and semi-contact sparring takes part under controlled conditions and students are required to wear full sparring gear when taking part in the semi-contact sparring segments of a class. There is no destruction testing within classes, this activity is limited to black belts taking black belt gradings.
How does the grading system work?
It takes a minimum of three and a half years to get to black belt and a time frame in excess of four years is probably more realistic. You will begin as a white belt and after a minimum training period of three months you will be able grade if the instructors think you are ready.
10th Kup (White Belt) to 4th Kup (Blue Belt), 3 months training between grades
4th Kup (Blue Belt) to 1st Dan (Black Belt), 6 months training between grades
